Head of School Search Frequently Asked Questions

When is Rebecca Skinner leaving ISB?

Rebecca is leaving at the end of December, 2017 to help establish a new IB school in Dubai. Joe Santos, the Assistant Head of School, will become the Interim Head of School upon Rebecca’s departure and until the permanent Head of School begins on July 1, 2018.

Who will hire the next Head of School?

The ISB Board of Trustees is responsible for hiring the next Head of School. The Board’s Executive Committee, headed by Nancy Woodruff, President, and Sophie Panchal, Vice President, is conducting the search. An Advisory Committee made up of Parents, Faculty, Staff, Alumni parents and additional Board members will assist in the final stages of the search.

What is the general timeline of the search?

  • The position was advertised starting in early February, with a closing date for applications of March 31, 2017
  • The Executive Committee will work throughout the spring to confidentially review all applications and interview promising candidates in person, by phone, or via Skype
  • Finalist candidates will come to ISB for site visits and interviews in the late spring of 2017
  • Later in 2017, the Board of Trustees will announce the new Head of School
  • The new Head of School will begin July 1, 2018

How will the ISB community be involved in the search?

In early February, the Board of Trustees asked all ISB Parents, Faculty, Staff, Alumni, Alumni parents, and Middle School students to participate in a survey to help determine the qualities the ISB community most values in the next Head of School. The results of this survey will help guide the Executive Committee in its selection process. Additionally, members of the ISB community--parents, faculty, staff, an alumni parent--have been asked to serve on the Advisory Committee.

What can you tell us about the candidates?

In order to respect the privacy of the candidates, the interview process must remain completely confidential, and the Executive Committee cannot share any specific information about the candidates’ current roles, backgrounds or experience with the ISB community. In general, we are interviewing a dynamic set of candidates who possess the qualities and experience detailed in our Head of School job description: http://isbrooklyn.org/app/uploads/2017/02/HOS-job-description-v.3.pdf

How will internal candidates be considered for the position?

Candidates from inside the ISB community will be evaluated in the same manner as external candidates.  Strict confidentiality will be given to all candidates until the round of finalists comes to ISB for site visits.

How will diversity be considered in the process?

Diversity is one of ISB’s six core values and a very important consideration for the Board of Trustees, who will interview a wide range of candidates to ensure the best appointment for ISB.  Our statement of non-discrimination is as follows:
International School of Brooklyn is committed to a policy of non-discrimination and equal opportunity for all employees and qualified applicants without regard to sex, gender identity or expression, race, color, religion, age, national origin, disability status, sexual orientation, or marital status. We seek candidates who are committed to upholding our core values of diversity, international mindedness, community, global curriculum, inquiry-based learning, and language immersion. We actively encourage applications from candidates with broad and diverse backgrounds and from individuals of all races, nationalities, identities, and beliefs. International School of Brooklyn is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
