ISB Admissions Procedures : Lower School, Nursery-5th Grade

Statement of Non-Discrimination

International School of Brooklyn admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs.

Communicating with the Admissions Team

Application Deadline and Fee

We are no longer accepting applications for Nursery – Kindergarten. However, we are still accepting applications for 1st – 5th grade. Complete applications and application fees must be received at ISB or postmarked by the deadline in order to receive a parent tour and interview appointment. It is strongly recommended to submit all of your admissions materials as soon as you are ready, in order to facilitate tour and interview scheduling. However, all applications receive equal consideration, as long as they are received/postmarked by the deadline.

Your application must include a non-refundable $75 fee. Checks should be made out to International School of Brooklyn (credit cards are accepted at the office or over the phone). WE CANNOT ACCEPT CASH.

Additional Application Materials

Please be sure to complete the Parent Statement section of the application (3rd page). The Parent Statement is an opportunity for you to share in writing how you would best describe your child.

If you are applying for Kindergarten-5th Grade, you will need to submit a copy of your child’s last school report, or a completed Teacher Form (to be filled out by your child’s current, or most recent, teacher). Please submit your child’s school report or the Teacher Form by the December 1, 2011 deadline.

Play-Based Assessments/Child Visits

A visit for your child(ren) will be scheduled when you receive your parent tour and interview date.

  • Nursery/PreK applicants – Your child’s visit will be in the form of a 30-minute play-based assessment with two ISB faculty members (visit includes table activities, circle time and informal group discussion). Parent(s) remain in the room during the visit. Conducted in English.
  • Kindergarten applicants - Your child’s visit will be in the form of a 45-minute play-based assessment with two ISB faculty members (visit includes table activities, circle time and informal group discussion). Parent(s) remain in the room during the visit. Conducted in English.
  • 1st Grade - Your child’s visit will be in the form of a 45-minute play-based assessment with two ISB faculty members (visit includes table activities, circle time and informal group discussion). Parent(s) remain in the room during the visit. Conducted in English (includes an informal target language assessment).
  • 2nd-5th Grades - Your child will come for a 1.5 hour visit in a classroom of their peers on a school day  (includes an informal target language assessment).
