International Feast Day: A Meal to Remember
With the excitement of the new school year still in the air, I am thrilled that one of my favorite days of the year is happening this week – International Feast Day!
This tradition, which began eight years ago as a way to celebrate our diversity, is by far one of the most highly anticipated days of the ISB school calendar. Each year, our growing community – which is now 230 students, their families, and over 50 staff members – partake in a potluck meal with dishes that span the globe. From the much anticipated “standard fare” (we have yet to have an ISB event without at least two different versions of Spanish “tortilla,” “arroz con pollo,” “mac n’ cheese” or “quiche”) to dishes that are shared by the newest ranks of ISB families and staff (I particularly remember some delicious curry dishes from last year), this meals provides a wonderful way for us to become aware of the breadth of our diversity. It provides an opportunity to get to know families from other grades and classes; to share a family tradition with a classmate; to make connections that will last a lifetime.
So, as the countdown begins, I know where my mind will be this week – busy discussing with my kids which of our favorite recipes we will share; busy preparing my shopping list; and busy dreaming of all of the wonderful smells, tastes, and coversations I will experience at our 8th annual International Feast Day on Friday.
