About Curious Jane
Week 2 (July 9th), Wired 101: This summer, our new Wired 101 is a bit electronics and a bit robotics. We’re including some of our favorite projects from last year, like the circuit cards, LED rollies, bristle bugs, and draw-bots, and we’re adding some new projects introduce slightly more complex circuits like designing quizzboards and experimenting with conductive paint. We use low voltage batteries, solder-less techniques, and safe wiring practices so that girls can really investigate what makes a circuit work without worrying about shocks or smoke. Our goal is for girls to be able to experiment easily with circuits and wiring so that they become comfortable creating surprising and successful projects on their own!
Week 3 (July 16th), Life Science: Do you have a budding botanist on your hands? In Life Science, girls are introduced to key principles in the life and growth of plants, animals and humans. They utilize the scientific method through experimentation and observation, and record their findings in their own lab notebooks. During this class, girls learn about concepts in Life Science like cell structure, DNA, food webs, nutrition and photosynthesis through hands-on experiments and projects. We create Jello salad cells, observe behavior of small animals, view cells under microscopes, learn about bacteria and more in this exploration of biology! Our goal is for girls to experiment in science intensively and freely, without worrying about a right answer. Science surrounds us, and understanding this is the basis of enjoying it. At the end of the week, they present their favorite experiments for students in a science exhibition.
Week 4 (July 23rd), Toy Design: In Toy Design, girls explore the concepts of play, toy, and design using a variety of materials to create their own line of toys. Each girl starts by making a design journal, and developing their company name and logo. The photo below features the design journal for Etc. Toys, and a felt food set complete with tags! In each project, girls are introduced to basic aspects of design like material choice, color palette, visual and physical balance, audience and packaging. Girls learn about designing soft toys, figures, and miniatures using hard and soft materials, while developing specific skills like pattern-making, hand stitching, and sculpting with clay. They learn about character development and how to express personality traits using specific shapes, colors, and materials. They also have an opportunity to design with small powered components, such as incorporating simple moving or light-up elements. They learn about designing a set; planning which parts of the objects are unique, and which parts tie them together as a family of objects. The instructor shares lots of tips and techniques for building, fastening and creating. Girls are encouraged to experiment widely in the form and function of their toys; then they channel their explorations into surprising results. Favorite projects include scale environments, amoeba pillows, mini-bots, game design and more!

About ISB French or Spanish Drama Camp
Children will work with theater specialists to cover the full drama spectrum: movement exercises, games, music, character development, script writing and more! The camp is conducted in French or Spanish environment. Children should be comfortable in an immersion setting and interested in developing their French or Spanish speaking skills. Children who have attended ISB’s French or Spanish camp for Weeks 1-4 may be eligible to attend this camp.
About Robo Mash-Up
Campers enrolled in the Robo-Mash-up will spend their mornings in a Robotics RCX workshop (taught by Robofun) and their afternoons in different specialty math and science camps. Campers have lunch and recess at ISB or at Carroll Park.
July 9th: Robofun/Mad Science, Crazy Chem Works (Taught by Mad Science)
July 16th: Robofun/Chess (Taught by New York Chess & Games)
July 23rd: Robofun/Aviation Club (The Hobby Quest)
Robofun RCX: Students design, build and program robotics projects using LEGO mini computers or RCX bricks, motors, sensors, and different design attachments. This program is suitable for new and returning students. For more information on Robofun’s programs, visit www.robofun.org
Mad Science: Come and spark imaginative learning with a week of Mad chemistry. Watch as we combine elements and make them fizz, crackle and change color! We’ll delve into molecules and chemical reactions that produce light, gas and even slime that you’ll get to keep! More info at www.madscience.org.
Chess: Taught by the experts of New York Chess & Game Center, classes are tailored to meet children’s interests. Classes incorporate movement and games into lessons on chess technique in order to keep campers interested and engaged in this classic game. More info at newyorkchessandgameshop.com.
Aviation Club: Soar through the summer with your own hand-made high flying aircraft! In this exciting summer camp you’ll learn to build your own aircrafts and delight as they soar overhead. You’ll have the perfect experience for the sunny summer days! Our campers build high-flying balsa wood motorized airplanes that can climb to altitudes as far up as four stories. Just make sure to watch out for birds! Sleek, fast, and efficient, these crafts shoot toward the sun in rocket-like ascent. Next you’ll discover our Long Distance Fliers that are made for wind endurance, traveling lengths as great as a football field and maintaining flight durations of up to three minutes. You can’t miss out on that incredible fun! And of course no vacation adventure would be complete without learning a few new tricks – and that’s just what our Stunt Machines are made for. Whether handling sharp maneuvers or sweeping through loops and curves, these models are sure to amaze. Each model is built from scratch and is yours to keep at the end of the camp!
