Immersion camp is open to children 3.5-8y (entering 3rd grade). Hands-on language immersion for children of all levels. Campers explore a new theme every week through visual arts, athletics, music, science, cooking and more. Classroom activities are structured to promote language acquisition. Field trips or in-house workshops are scheduled on a weekly basis. Butter Beans lunch service is available for an additional weekly fee. Campers must turn 3 by April 15, 2013.
2013 Weekly Themes
Postcards from ISB: Week 1 (7/8 to 7/12) & Week 2 (7/15 to 7/19)
Pack your bags! ISB Campers will spend these two weeks virtually traveling around the world, exploring various communities, cultures, and climates.
Week 1: Campers will travel to Brazil, Japan and India.
Week 2: Campers will travel to Italy, Australia and Iceland.
Inside Inventions: Week 3 (7/22-7/26) & Week 4 (7/29-8/2)
Week 3: “Puppets to Robots” A journey through the world of toys, from intricate marionettes to robots of all kinds. During week 3, campers will set out on a full exploration of toy design, function, and most importantly, play.
Week 4: “Wacky Science” This week is a celebration of the inquisitive mind. Campers will learn about the sciences of the every day world including colors, nature and silly experiments for our junior inventors.
Art Adventures: Week 5 (8/5-8/9) & Week 6 (August 8/12-8/16)
Week 5: “Design Studio” Creativity will abound during this week of camp. Campers will explore patterns and nature, 3D and textile design. Camp groups will work on individual and collaborative projects.
Week 6: “Clowning Around” Campers will explore the art of the circus, from acrobatics to clowning, juggling to costume design. The week will culminate with a circus parade.
Sample Camp Day
8:00am-8:45am – Early Drop Off
8:45am-9:00am – Arrival*
9:00am to 9:15am – Morning Greeting: Circle Time, Discussion of Activities
9:15am to 10:15am – Group Activities**
10:15am to 10:30am – Snack Time (provided by ISB. Snack includes grains and fruit)
10:30am to 11:00am – Recess
11:00am-12:00pm – Group Activities
12:00pm-12:30pm – Lunch (12:00pm-Dismissal for half-day campers)
12:30pm-1:00pm – Recess (Nap Time***/Quiet Time for younger campers before recess)
1:00pm to 3:00pm – Group Activities/Carroll Park
3:00pm-6:00pm – After Camp Care
*Early drop off participants are escorted from the play yard to their classrooms.
**Group activities include art, cooking, drama, athletics and more!
***Nap time is available for campers who regularly sleep after lunch. Campers who no longer nap will have quiet time where they can look at books and/or draw.
Field Trips and Specialty Workshops
Field trips and/or specialty workshops are scheduled on a weekly basis and correspond to the theme of the session. Field trips and workshops may differ for camp groups based on age. Special activities are lead in French or Spanish when possible. *Dismissal for half-day campers is occasionally pushed back to accommodate travel time.
Field Trip Transportation: Camp groups travel by foot or by subway to trip destinations. Camp groups are staffed to ensure a 1:3 ratio for our youngest campers and a 1:4 ratio for our older groups. Parents occasionally chaperone trips.
Past Field Trips Include: Museum of Natural History & Hayden Planetarium, Puppetworks, Brooklyn Boulders, Brooklyn Museum, New York Aquarium, The Transit Museum, Museum of Art & Design, and more.
